The Domain Mistakes That Cost Businesses Most
Letting someone else be the registrant
If your web designer registered your domain under their own account and details, they own your web address. When the relationship ends, or they go quiet, or their business closes, you can lose the domain your customers, letterheads and Google rankings all depend on. Check this today. It takes one email.
Splitting DNS across three suppliers
Domain at one company, hosting at a second, email at a third, and nobody sure who controls the DNS. Every change becomes a week of support tickets, and diagnosing an outage becomes guesswork. Consolidate the control, even if the services stay separate.
Ignoring email authentication
Without SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, your quotes and invoices are far more likely to be filtered as spam, and your domain can be spoofed by scammers invoicing your customers in your name. Setting these up takes a few minutes and almost nobody does it.
Missing the renewal
Domain renewal notices go to whatever email address was used at registration, which is frequently a staff member who left in 2022. Then the domain expires, the website and all email stop, and recovery ranges from awkward to impossible. This is why I manage renewals rather than trusting an automated reminder.
Common questions
Should I use .co.za or .com?
If your customers are South African, .co.za is generally the stronger choice. It signals local relevance to both Google and to visitors deciding whether you're a local business. If you trade internationally or already have brand recognition, .com makes sense. Many businesses register both and redirect one, which is cheap insurance against a competitor taking the other.
Will the domain be registered in my name?
Yes, always. Your business as the registrant with your contact details on record. This is not universal practice and it matters enormously: if a provider registers your domain under their own name, you don't own your web address and leaving them can mean losing it. Ask any current provider to confirm who the registrant is. If they hesitate, that's your answer.
Can I move a domain I already have?
Yes. A transfer needs the authorisation code from your current registrar plus confirmation from the registered contact email. I handle the process and time it so your website and email keep running throughout, transfers only cause outages when DNS is changed carelessly, which is avoidable.
Can I get email on my domain?
Yes, and you should. you@yourbusiness.co.za is more credible than a Gmail address on every quote you send. I set up mailboxes plus the SPF, DKIM and DMARC DNS records that stop your invoices landing in customers' spam folders. A step most setups skip, which is why so much small-business mail gets filtered.
What happens when my domain is due for renewal?
I track renewal dates and handle them before they lapse. Expired domains are a genuinely serious problem in South Africa: your website and all company email stop at once, and popular expired domains get bought within hours. This is the single most preventable IT disaster I see.
Do you manage DNS for services hosted elsewhere?
Yes. Plenty of clients keep their domain and DNS with me while running their website on Shopify, WordPress.com, Wix or a corporate platform, and their email on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Having one competent person holding DNS makes every future change straightforward.
