Diagnose First, Quote Second, Fix Third
The complaint I hear most about computer repair shops is the mystery invoice: you drop off a laptop, hear nothing for a week, and collect it with a bill for work you never approved, sometimes with the original problem still there.
That's not how this works. I diagnose the fault, tell you what's wrong in plain language, and quote you for the fix including parts. You approve or decline. If a repair genuinely isn't economic, a motherboard failure on an ageing laptop, for instance, I'll tell you to replace the machine and offer to move your data across instead. Losing a small repair job is better than charging someone for a bad decision.
Business Machines Get Priority
If you're a business client, a broken machine means someone can't work. Business repairs get prioritised, and where possible I'll set up a temporary machine or get the user working from another device while theirs is being fixed. That's part of the wider IT support service rather than a separate transaction.
Common questions
How much does a PC repair cost?
Diagnostics come first and you get a firm quote before any repair work starts, covering both parts and labour. Simple software fixes, malware removal, a corrupted Windows profile, a failed update, are usually a modest labour charge. Hardware repairs depend on the part. If the repair costs more than the machine is worth, I'll say so plainly instead of quietly billing you for it.
My laptop is really slow. Is it worth fixing?
Very often yes, and cheaply. The most common cause by a wide margin is an old mechanical hard drive. Swapping it for an SSD and adding RAM typically makes a five-year-old machine feel new, for a fraction of replacement cost. The exception is genuinely old hardware that can't run a supported version of Windows, then replacing is the better spend and I'll tell you.
Can you recover data from a dead laptop or drive?
Usually, yes. If the drive still spins up and is readable, recovery success rates are high, and I can pull your data even when the laptop itself is beyond repair. Physically failed drives with mechanical damage need a specialist clean-room lab, which I'll refer you to honestly rather than risk making things worse. Critical rule: stop using the machine immediately. Continued use overwrites recoverable data.
Do you remove viruses and ransomware?
Yes. Virus and malware removal, browser hijacks, fake 'support' popups and cryptomining infections. For ransomware specifically, be careful of anyone promising recovery, if files are properly encrypted and you have no clean backup, decryption is usually impossible. Which is exactly why tested backups matter more than any antivirus product.
Do I need to bring the machine in, or do you collect?
Both work. For businesses in Pretoria and Centurion I can collect and return, or work on-site if the machine can't leave the office. Individual clients usually arrange a drop-off. Software-only problems can often be handled remotely without the machine going anywhere at all.
How long does a repair take?
Software repairs and virus removal are typically same-day or next-day. Hardware repairs depend on parts availability, common items like SSDs, RAM, batteries and fans are usually next-day; specific laptop screens or motherboard components can take a few days to source. I'll give you a realistic timeframe with the quote.
