Business Network Setup & Wi-Fi in Pretoria

Dead spots in the boardroom, connections that drop during calls, fibre you're paying for but never seem to get, and a Wi-Fi password stuck to the router since 2019. I design, install and secure business networks in Pretoria and Centurion, properly configured, not left on defaults.

Scope

Network Services

Business Wi-Fi Design

Access points positioned by coverage need, on a wired backbone, with seamless roaming between them and no dead spots.

Routers & Switches

Managed switches, VLANs, PoE for access points and cameras, and routing configured for how your business actually works.

Firewalls

Business-grade firewalling, segmentation, content filtering and intrusion protection, not the defaults on your ISP box.

VPN Access

Secure remote access for home workers and site-to-site links between branches, with proper authentication and logging.

Fibre & Failover

ISP handover done right, plus LTE or second-line failover so an outage doesn't stop the entire business trading.

Troubleshooting

Dropped connections, packet loss and slowdowns traced with actual measurement rather than replacing hardware hopefully.

Common Problems

What I Usually Find

Extenders daisy-chained across the building

Each wireless hop roughly halves your available bandwidth and adds latency. Three extenders in series turns a 100 Mbps line into something unusable for video calls. Access points on cable fix this permanently.

Everything on one flat network

Guest phones, staff laptops, the accounting PC, security cameras and a smart TV all on the same segment. One compromised device then has a clear path to everything. Segmentation costs nothing but configuration time.

Default admin passwords

Routers, switches, access points and network printers still on factory credentials, reachable from inside your office by anyone who joins the Wi-Fi. This is found on the majority of first visits.

No idea what's on the network

Nobody can say how many devices are connected, what that unlabelled switch in the ceiling does, or where a particular cable goes. Part of every installation is documentation. A diagram and inventory that means the next problem takes minutes to diagnose instead of hours.

Networks are the foundation everything else sits on. If the network is unreliable, no amount of desktop support makes the office feel like it works.

Answers

Common questions

Why is our office Wi-Fi so bad when we have fibre?

Almost always because a single ISP-supplied router is being asked to cover an entire office. Those routers are built for a flat with three devices, not a building with brick walls and twenty-five devices. The fix is proper access points placed where people actually work, on a wired backbone, not a stronger router or a chain of cheap extenders, which usually make things worse by halving throughput at each hop.

Do you install cabling?

Yes, Cat6 data cabling, wall points, patch panels and cabinet tidy-ups, coordinated with a cabling installer for larger runs. Wireless has its place, but anything that matters, access points, desktops, servers, printers, card machines, belongs on cable. Wireless everything is how you end up with an office that mysteriously slows down at 10am.

Can you set up a VPN so staff can work from home?

Yes. Site-to-site VPNs between offices, and client VPNs so remote staff reach internal systems securely. Done properly this includes authentication, restricting who can reach what, and logging, rather than a shared password that everybody who ever worked there still knows.

What about a firewall? Do we need one?

If you handle client data, take payments, or would be badly hurt by ransomware, then yes, and a business firewall is not the same thing as the basic filtering in your ISP router. Proper firewalling gives you segmentation (guest Wi-Fi genuinely separated from your accounting machines), intrusion protection and visibility of what's leaving your network.

Can you separate guest Wi-Fi from our business network?

Yes, and you should have this. Guest and staff traffic on the same flat network means a visitor's infected phone sits on the same segment as your file storage and accounting PC. Proper VLAN segmentation keeps guests on internet-only access with no route to internal systems. It's a configuration change, not extra hardware.

How do you quote a network installation?

With a site visit first. Office layout, wall construction, existing cabling, device count and where people actually sit all change the design, and quoting without seeing it produces either a padded number or an underspecified one. After the visit you get a fixed written quote listing the hardware, labour and what the result should achieve.
